Welcome to Kirriemuir – or Kirrie, the Wee Red Toun or even Thrums, depending on who you ask. This rural, former market town and weaving settlement set above the Gairie Burn really repays exploration, with winding narrow streets and cute cottages at its core unspoiled by modern development. Scotland’s oldest sweet shop is one of the surprises, located on the pedestrianised Roods alleyway. There are four interesting tourist attractions covering local history, nature and two of the town’s famous sons (author J M Barrie and AC DC’s Bon Scott) – impressive given the local population of only a few thousand. Nostalgic museums and traditional local businesses – it would be tempting to describe Kirrie as “the town that never grew up”…
