📌 Kirriemuir, Angus
★★

This unassuming weaver’s cottage in Kirriemuir is the childhood home of J.M. Barrie – creator of Peter Pan. The author was the ninth of ten children (though two died before he was born), and you can still see the cramped box beds they would have shared on the upstairs floor. Other highlights include the writing desk from Barrie’s London flat, the separate washhouse which became a makeshift theatre for childhood plays, and a newer jungle-themed garden featuring that infamous ticking crocodile. Barrie’s final resting place can also be visited – a 10-minute uphill walk away in the town cemetery.
