A Camera Obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens, allowing a magnified image of the surrounding area to be projected to viewers within. Popular in Victorian times, there are now three left working in Scotland: one at the Camera Obscura & World of Illusions in Edinburgh, one inside Dumfries Museum – and one in Kirriemuir, Angus. The latter was gifted by Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie, who was born in the town in 1860; its situation on the top of a local hillock allows wide views across the houses and beyond towards the Angus Glens. A clear, dry day is required to operate the camera.
