Stirling Castle is Stirling‘s crowning glory, at the top of the volcanic outcrop of Castle Hill and a short uphill walk from the city centre. Built in various stages from the 14th century onwards, the castle saw the crowning of a series of Scottish Kings and Queens, and several sieges during the Wars of Independence. Today you can explore dozens of separate buildings, battlements and exhibitions, and overall the castle probably comes within a hair’s breadth of Edinburgh Castle in terms of interest. An in-depth visit is required to justify the hefty admission charge; the reconstructed palace apartments, royal chapel and Great Hall are all obvious attractions, but fewer visitors explore the out-of-the-way Stirling Tapestries exhibition or Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum, for example. A tour of Argyll’s Lodging is also included in the price, just downhill from the castle.
