Sandhaven Beach topped the rankings for the UK’s best beach in a 2022 list released by The Sunday Times. If that makes you raise an eyebrow or two then you’re not alone, but nevertheless this sandy South Shields expanse is something Tynesiders should be proud of. The beach stretches for roughly a mile between South Pier and Trow Point, kept both safe and spotless by seasonal lifeguard patrols, a swarm of litter bins and summer canine bans. The full seaside experience is available, ranging from a fully-fledged funfair at the north end, scenic cliffs at the other, and a liberal scattering of pubs and cafes along the esplanade in between. If that isn’t enough, South Marine Park is close at hand, offering its own set of attractions.
