A long chain of parks runs parallel to South Shields‘ excellent beaches: North Marine Park, South Marine Park, Bents Park and The Bents. Of these, South Marine Park is the most popular and most interesting; opened in 1890 on the site of old spoil heaps, it’s recently undergone major restoration, using the very first head gardener’s old diary as a reference guide. Attractions include a boating pond, playground, cafΓ© and even a miniature steam railway.
