Extending for half a mile south from the River Tyne Entrance to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, Littlehaven Beach is arguably South Shields‘ “second” beach, after better-known Sandhaven. Take a stroll along the sand to Herd Groyne at the north end to see the red lighthouse which looks a bit like it’s about to blast off into outer space; there are good views up the river from here too. There are several interesting sculptures placed on the esplanade, from a friendly tortoise to an eye inscribed with the words of a Northumbrian folk song.
