πŸ“Œ Town on the Isle of Mull
β˜…β˜…β˜…

Tobermory is the capital of the Isle of Mull and by far its largest settlement. Brightly coloured houses stretch around a sheltered bay, with quieter, residential pockets scattered along the hillside above. If the setting looks familiar, it might be because the town was the location for the BBC’s children’s TV series Balamory. In real life there are lots of attractions for adults as well as kids, including a popular distillery, small museum and a catch-and-release aquarium, as well as dozens of gift shops and cafΓ©s stocked to the rafters with tempting cakes. We also enjoyed an excellent evening meal at The Mishnish restaurant on the main street. A word of warning: some visitors try to “do Mull” by attempting to visit Tobermory and Iona in a single day. This involves several hours of driving (mostly on single-track roads) and won’t leave enough time to do justice to either location.

🚢 The town rewards exploration, with lots to do even without including the scenic coast path south from here.

🚒🚌 Tobermory has a bus connection to Craignure for the ferry to Oban on the mainland, and another westwards to Calgary. There’s also a car ferry to Kilchoan in remote Ardnamurchan.
