This well-kept Victorian spa town nestles in one of the broad glens spidering out from the Cromarty Firth, overlooked by Knockfarrel Ridge. Trains used to bring in health tourists in their thousands in the late 1800s and early 1900s; the railway is now gone but the station remains, converted into local businesses and the nostalgic Highland Museum of Childhood. Most of the town is pleasantly old-fashioned and fairly quiet – bypassed by the nearby North Coast 500 driving route – so the bonkers Strathpuffer cycling race held each winter to the north of town seems quite out of keeping. There’s also a Pictish symbol stone in a field just off the high street, plus local walks and and a charming castle to visit.

🚶 This straggling town is nevertheless small enough to explore on foot, and the walk along Knockfarrel Ridge is also reachable. Rogie Falls are theoretically reachable by off-road paths and tracks – allow half a day.
🚌 There’s no longer a railway station, but buses call here on the Inverness to Ullapool route.
