π Contin, Highland

β
The village of Contin sits on the boundary between the fertile farmland of Easter Ross and the much more rugged landscape of the Northwest Highlands – the step change in scenery is palpable here when driving towards Ullapool from Inverness. Manmade attractions are replaced by natural ones on the tourist map, of which the first comes only a couple of miles beyond Contin at Rogie Falls. A dramatic suspension bridge hangs over this powerful waterfall amongst spectacular Highland scenery; salmon are ushered along an artificial staircase at the side. A wide path leads directly to the falls, but the longer loop described here allows fuller immersion in the surroundings, with a picturesque upper section of rapids and a few other viewpoints also visited.
