📌 Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway

Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns, passed away on 21 July 1796 at the young age of 37. His final resting place, shared with his wife and three sons, is beneath a painted white dome within the churchyard of St Michael’s and South Parish Church, Dumfries. The mausoleum itself was built by local stonemason John Milligan and was financed by a high-profile fundraising campaign, replacing a less impressive grave elsewhere in the kirkyard. Inside the dome is a statue (by Irish-Italian sculptor Peter Turnerelli) of Burns himself, with one hand on a plough and overlooked by his fictional muse Coila.
