Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway
★★

There are enough Burns-related attractions in Dumfries to quench the thirst of even the most ardent fanatics of Scotland’s most famous poet, who spent his last years here after moving from Ellisland Farm near Auldgirth. The Robert Burns Centre should perhaps be the one you visit first, reached by a pedestrian suspension bridge across the River Nith. The building is an 18th century former water mill, converted into an impressive arts hub including theatre / cinema and decent-looking restaurant. And the Robert Burns part of course: an exhibition about the poet’s time in Dumfries, and by extension, town life in the late 18th century.
