📌 Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland
★★★

Fishing, tourism and coal mining: these are the three main industries that have crafted Newbiggin-by-the-Sea over the centuries, and their stories are told in the town’s smart Maritime Centre. The highlights (pictured below) are two local boats – the Girl Anne and the Mary Joicey – a fisherman’s coble and the last offshore lifeboat. Coupled with a very reasonable admission fee, it’s an essential part of any visit to Newbiggin. The museum is just one part of the building; there’s also a shop, cafe and community space hosting regular events.
