Mealt Falls, sometimes known as Kilt Rock Waterfall, is probably Skye’s most famous waterfall – and certainly one of the most accessible. The outflow from Loch Mealt plunges 50 metres over basalt cliffs directly onto jagged rocks at sea level, with a concrete platform built right on the rim of the cliff providing an excellent and safe viewpoint. The even higher Kilt Rock headland to the north makes for a spectacular backdrop (yes, it does look a bit like a kilt), and the view south towards Rubha nam Brathairean isn’t bad either. If the weather is sunny, we recommend visiting during the first half of the day, as the cliffs cast a long shadow over the falls as evening approaches. Not to be confused with the similarly-named Lealt Falls nearby to the south.
