The idea of visiting an exhibition about a working tearoom seems a bit strange – why not just dine there instead? Well, the Willow Tea Rooms on Glasgow‘s bustling Sauchiehall Street are no ordinary establishment: they are a 1903 triumph of the powerful partnership between successful businesswoman Kate Cranston and (now) famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Two floors of exhibits “spill the tea” on the development of temperance tea-drinking and how Miss Cranston almost singlehandedly turned this into a popular leisure pursuit, as well as delving into the detail behind Mackintosh’s striking designs. The potentially dry subject matter (not literally, of course) is very well presented with audiovisual displays and some entertaining interactive games, and you can book a tour to explore parts of the actual tearooms for an extra fee. Or book a table, of course!
