π Town on Shetland Mainland

There’s something special about Lerwick. Perhaps it’s the independent shops, the 5-minute rush hour, the well-preserved broch sitting across the road from the main supermarket, or the fact there’s no comparably sized town within 100 miles. Whatever it is, this is an island capital far removed from mainland life, and not just geographically. The town’s an excellent base for exploring Shetland, but it’s easy to spend a day exploring the local sights without getting in the car. Beyond the narrow central wynds and shops there are several attractions including the picturesque harbourfront (with a fantastic boat trip around the Isle of Noss from here), Shetland’s outstanding flagship museum and a hilltop artillery fort overlooking the Sound of Bressay. Or head out to The Knab headland for wonderful sunset views.
