πŸ“Œ Town in Fife
β˜…β˜…β˜…

Kirkcaldy lies a close second behind Dunfermline for the title of Fife’s largest town. Like many of the coastal settlements on the kingdom’s south coast, Kirkcaldy’s early growth came from fishing, coal mining and salt production. These were followed by something more unusual: the manufacture of lino(leum), popular as a floor covering until a few decades ago. These industries have all now declined but are remembered in the excellent town museum. The winding High Street’s exceptional length has given Kirkcaldy a nickname of the Lang Toun, but the resulting abundance of retail footage has clearly presented a challenge in today’s economic climate; the number of vacant premises was sadly all too obvious on our 2021 visit. This is a shame, since Kirkcaldy has some enviable assets, including a superb park, curiously underused beach strip, and ruined castles and cute fishing villages in the vicinity. See below for the list of local sights.

🚢 Beveridge Park and the museum / gallery are walkable from the town centre. Ravenscraig Castle is a longer walk; use the coast path to continue to Dysart (or take a bus).

πŸš†πŸšŒ There’s a railway station with trains from Edinburgh, Dundee and all along the Fife coast. If for some reason you’d rather use a bus, there are many options, including routes from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Dunfermline and several other local towns.

πŸš— Central car parks have a charge, with plenty of free spaces a short walk from the centre.
