๐Ÿ“Œ Glenfinnan, Highland
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Nearly a year before the fateful Battle of Culloden, over a thousand Highland clansmen congregated at the head of Glen Shiel to pledge loyalty to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause. Defeat was to follow on 16th April 1746, along with thousands of lives lost. The Glenfinnan Monument – crowned with a proud Highlander – remembers those lost in what was to be the final Jacobite rebellion, in a magnificent and fitting location looking down the loch. Although the scenery and the monument are the main attractions, a visitor centre and exhibition bulk up the visitor offering and help space out the constant stream of summer visitors. It’s also well worth following the short path on the other side of the visitor centre up to the viewpoint for the even more popular Glenfinnan Viaduct, with further superlative vistas over the tower and loch on the way.
