π Town in Tyne & Wear
β
The River Tyne separates Gateshead from its bigger neighbour and perennial rival, Newcastle upon Tyne. The river certainly isn’t the chasm that the history annals make it out to be; the two settlement’s centres are less than a mile apart, and linked by several pedestrian-friendly bridges. Two points of interest are close to the regenerated riverside: start with a visit to the local heritage centre before wandering east past the shiny Glasshouse (formerly The Sage) to the excellent Baltic Art Centre – half a day is sufficient for all of this. The town centre itself is slightly further from the river and has useful shops and services for residents, but any tourist appeal is limited to a few old buildings marooned amongst a sea of new retail development.
