Findhorn is a small village in a fragile location on a sandy spit; to the east is the vast arc of Burghead Bay, while to the south, the sheltered estuary of Findhorn Bay provides important habitat for wading birds. The coastal setting is beautiful but the old village is very quiet, and the two main streets won’t hold your attention for long. A mile further inland, Findhorn Ecovillage has a more unusual appeal: this sustainable community began life in 1962 as the Findhorn Foundation, and has since flourished into a sizeable centre for environmentally-friendly living. Powered by renewable energy, the population now numbers several hundred, collectively with the lowest ecological footprint per capita anywhere in the developed world. Visitors are welcome.
