📌 Village in Northumberland
★★

Never has the phrase small but perfectly formed been so apt: Etal consists of just a handful of cottages on a single, L-shaped lane, but it oozes rural beauty from every pore – or every straw of the several thatched roofs. Etal is an excellent example of an “estate village”, where the vast majority of buildings are owned by the large Ford & Etal estate, which is also the steward for most of Ford village, a couple of miles to the southeast. Etal is the smaller of the two hamlets, but there’s a surprising amount to do here: admire the ruined castle, ride the heritage railway to a historic corn mill, visit the church (across the road), or enjoy refreshments at the pub or tearoom before a leisurely stroll along the River Till.
