📌 Village in Northumberland
★★

Ford village fits neatly onto a single street – more or less – running uphill from the gates of (private) Ford Castle and its attractive neighbouring church. There is no actual ford immediately apparent, though the bridged River Till is fairly nearby! The charming, uniform architectural style of the village’s cottages are the fruit of Louisa Beresford, who inherited Ford after the death of her husband. She created the model estate village to improve living standards for her tenants; her artistic talents can also be seen in the Lady Waterford Hall, the former school at the heart of the village. The wider estate also incorporates nearby Etal village, and there are several interesting tourist attractions dotted around it, reachable either by public footpaths or a quick trip via road.
