📌 Port William, Dumfries & Galloway

They aren’t the best examples of ancient rock art that we’ve seen, but these mysterious symbols will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has visited any of the better known cup and ring marked stones dotted around Scotland, such as those in Kilmartin Glen. Carved between 3,500 and 1,000 BC, the grooves and patterns may be connected to the nearby Drumtroddan Standing Stones, though their exact significance is unknown. Lichen growth has also made some of the markings tricky to spot. Visitors troubled by cows should avoid this site, since the outcrops are found within a field often full of them; the outcrops themselves are surrounded by metal railings, but crossing the field is required to reach them (and to leave again afterwards!).
