Dingwall is an historic town guarding the head of the Cromarty Firth. Despite now being bypassed by the main road north, clues to its former importance include its Royal Burgh status and the name itself: a corruption of the Scandinavian Þingvöllr, meaning meeting place or parliament. Any other Viking links are now scarce on the ground – as are any remains of the old castle – but the smart town centre is still an attractive place for a wander, with lots of affordable places to eat and a built-up feel which is increasingly scarce this far north in Scotland. There are pleasant, gentle walks and marine life-spotting opportunities in the wider area, while the MacDonald Monument overlooks the town from a steep hillside to the south.
