Dingwall, Highland
★★
Dingwall Museum is housed in the town’s tolbooth; its 16th century central tower makes this the most distinctive building on High Street. As one of Scotland’s most important towns north of Inverness, Dingwall has a long history dating back to before Viking times. Topics and artefacts span two floors and include the old Mercat Cross and other sculptured stones, reconstructed homes, shops and businesses of yesteryear, wartime displays and even a whole room modelled on a burgh council meeting (the last of which was in 1975 when the region was subsumed into the Highland authority area). Unfortunately photos of the interior weren’t permitted on our 2024 visit.
