If you ever find yourself travelling east on the A863 (from western Skye towards Sligachan or Broadford) on a fine evening, your eyes are in for a visual feast. The road is one of the best spots from which to marvel the entire length of the gabbro and basalt summits of the Cuillin Ridge. Eleven fearsome peaks over 3,000 feet make up the stuff of Munro baggers’ dreams – or nightmares – unparalleled in severity anywhere else in Scotland. All of this, of course, is difficult to take in when navigating unfamiliar tarmac with only a few laybys, most of which seem to be situated in unphotogenic spots. Luckily for you, we think we’ve worked out the best one: this is found on the right (southwest) side of the road as it begins to descend into Glen Drynoch – exact location details below.
