There’s pretty much a set itinerary if you visit Craster. Seafood, harbour, castle – once you’ve found a parking space, that is. This well-kept, Northumberland fishing village has a recent history of herring smoking: Robson & Sons still own a smokehouse here, and Craster kippers are somewhat famous. We loved them in a bun at Piper’s Pitch (an understated hut by the car park), and also enjoyed local crab at The Jolly Fisherman in the village centre. The mile’s walk to Dunstanburgh Castle is a straightforward one (particularly interesting at low tide if you like rockpooling), described in our separate walk page, listed below.
