📌 Biggar, South Lanarkshire
★★★

Biggar Gasworks opened in 1839 and supplied coal gas to the town of Biggar for 130 years. Most of the machinery still remains in place, and on selected “Steam Days” you can see much of it in action, starting in the noisy Retort House where the coal is heated to produce gas. Unwanted components such as tar, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide were then removed over several stages, before the purified gas was stored in large holders awaiting distribution.
