Interrupting a row of semi-detached houses in pleasant suburbia, Benwell Temple is one of the few remaining features of Hadrian’s Wall to survive within Newcastle. The temple was built sometime before the year 180, and was dedicated to the little-known god Antenociticus – probably “just” a local deity. It once formed part of a settlement supporting nearby Benwell Fort. Nothing remains of the fort, but Benwell Vallum Crossing is just a couple of streets away.
