The “Vallum” is a ditch flanked by earth mounds which runs parallel to the better-known Hadrian’s Wall next to its south side. At Benwell on the west side of Newcastle there is a well-preserved causeway across the vallum, built from stone. It was built to access Benwell Fort (of which nothing now remains) directly to the north on Hadrian’s Wall itself, and is the only vallum crossing still visible anywhere along the wall.
