Separated from Forres town centre by the busy A96 trunk road, Benromach Distillery marks the northwest corner of the Speyside whisky region. The distillery was founded in 1898 but production ceased almost immediately due to financial issues; it reopened a decade later but was again mothballed in the 1980s. Gordon & MacPhail are the most recent owners; the distillery currently produces less whisky than most on Speyside, but makes up for volume with attractive whitewashed buildings and well-tended grounds – not to mention some award-winning whiskies. They also make gin marketed under the Red Door label, with separate tours available for this. Photos aren’t permitted inside the production areas.
