📌 Stenness, Orkney Mainland
★★

The Barnhouse Settlement is a relative newcomer to the Orkney tourist scene, a 5,000 year old Neolithic village only discovered in 1984. Don’t come expecting another Skara Brae. Although the Barnhouse Settlement was around at the same time, it was abandoned much earlier and never developed to the same extent. Without having been protected by deep sand dunes as at Skara Brae, agriculture over the centuries has left the structures in a poor state. But it’s free to visit, usually quiet, and easily reached on foot from the nearby Stones of Stenness (park here).
