For visitors without a car, Alnwick is most easily reached by bus; this touristy market town’s railway station closed to passengers in 1968, with the station buildings now occupied by Barter Books. More recently, the Aln Valley Railway Trust has campaigned to reopen most of the branch line as a heritage railway, eventually reconnecting with the East Coast Main Line at Alnmouth. About a mile of track has so far been laid between two new stations on the outskirts of Alnwick and at Greenrigg, with steam and diesel services running most weekends and some weekdays, passing through attractive countryside and across a short viaduct.
