📌 Bookshop in Alnwick, Northumberland
★★★

This secondhand bookshop on the east side of Alnwick is an unmissable pilgrimage destination for any book lover. Housed in Alnwick’s former railway station, the platforms have been filled in and replaced by scores of bookshelves, comfy armchairs, quirky decorations and even a working model railway up in the rafters. Former waiting rooms have been converted into a charming cafe – The Station Buffet – and an ice cream parlour has recently opened. Given the size of the space, the selection of books is obviously unparalleled, from architecture to zoology and everything in between (including superb travel and walking sections for explorers of Northumberland, Scotland and beyond). Look out for the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster by the toilets; rediscovered in 2000, its reprinting led to millions of copies and spinoffs across the world.
