π Town in Scottish Borders

β
Perhaps one of the more overlooked Borders settlements, Selkirk (Church by the hall) is nevertheless worth a visit for its two museums and varied local walk options. The town has ancient origins as one of Scotland’s oldest royal burghs, was home to the first Borders abbey before the monks moved to Kelso Abbey, and novelist Sir Walter Scott lived and worked here for the last 30 years of his life. The grandest local building is The Haining, next to its own loch; wandering around this, along the nearby Ettrick Water or up to the Three Brethren in the hills to the north are all fine ways to spend a few hours.
