📌 Brora, Highland
★★

Brora is a peaceful place nowadays, but was once one of the main industrial centres of the northern Highlands. Coal mining, salt production and brickmaking were among the industries which underpinned the local economy and their tales are well told here; other parts of the museum cover famous locals, Brora Rangers F.C., the Capaldi ice cream dynasty and a huge array of historic artefacts from everyday life. The centre is a little way out of Brora, reached by following a narrow road along the north bank of the River Brora for half a mile or so to a grassy area which used to be used for coal extraction. This location probably impacts on the number of visitors – but should be addressed by mid 2025 when a replacement museum is due to open closer to the main road.
