📌 Wigtown, Dumfries & Galloway

Wigtown Museum is housed in the county buildings at the heart of Wigtown, eastern gateway to The Machars peninsula. For a former county capital in a region with such rich history, the museum itself is disappointing, comprising a couple of display cases and information panels crammed into a connecting space between rooms. The building itself is much more interesting; built in French Gothic style in 1862, it serves as the town hall and is a real focal point for the town centre, oozing elegance and importance. Poking around the interior also reveals an old prison cell (or Martyrs’ Cell, referring to some of its former inmates), library, and a wildlife interpretation room on the top floor which was closed on our visit.
