📌 Cave near Rosewell, Midlothian

Wallace’s Cave is a popular place name in Scotland, with several caves dotted around the country named after the famous Scottish knight, William Wallace. This one in Roslin Glen is close to site of the Battle of Rosslyn, which William Wallace fought in. It’s found on the less-visited south side of the gorge, with a charming carved-stone staircase used to reach the entrance. I’ve explored a handful of possible access paths but the route mentioned below is the easiest to follow and respects the privacy of local residents.

💬 From the layby above it’s a 20-min (each way) to the cave (⬤ Moderate). Take the clear but occasionally muddy footpath immediately northeast of the layby (on the opposite side) into the wildlife reserve, descending into the glen. A detour straight ahead leads to a good view of the River North Esk, but otherwise keep right to follow the side of the glen northeast. There is one awkward, muddy crossing of a tributary burn which requires care. Just before the cave, rock-carved steps descend to the entrance.
