📌 Aboyne, Aberdeenshire
★★★

For many tourists, Aboyne is merely a temporary lower speed limit on the way to upper Deeside and the Cairngorms National Park. But there’s good walking in these parts too. Mortlich’s forested slopes rise up to the north of the village’s golf club, with excellent views from the summit. Varying the return is possible via tracks heading east, before returning via the Deeside Way and the north side of the loch. The route as a whole is no stroll in the park: inadequate waymarkers do little more than provide a false sense of security and vegetation growth can hinder progress especially in late summer.
