Upstream from the popular historic site of Corrimony Chambered Cairn, signposts point the way into the vast Corrimony Nature Reserve. As well as Scottish crossbills, black grouse and golden eagles, this little-visited RSPB reserve also boasts a very impressive waterfall on its more accessible eastern fringe. Access is through the grounds of Corrimony Estate; a mansion house was once the grand centrepiece, but tree-lined avenues and faint earthworks are the only surviving clues. Look out for Mony’s Stone on the return route, which is said to mark the burial place of a Viking raider, son of one of the kings of Denmark – though the stone may originally have been erected much nearer to the waterfall.
