π Brodick, Isle of Arran

The low Clauchland Hills form a ridge separating Brodick from Lamlash, with only the summits peeking above extensive forestry plantations. They receive relatively few visitors (we only saw only one other person on our late July visit), yet offer breathtaking views, both north to Brodick and Goatfell, and south to Lamlash and Holy Island. Car parks on three sides make quick ascents possible, but for the ultimate exploration of the range, this nine-mile circuit from Brodick ticks all the boxes. After a traverse of the ridge, returning via the surprisingly rough coast path north from Clauchlands Point gives views of the steep-sided hills from below, accompanied by waves breaking on the rocky shore.
