Separated by a loch from the outskirts of Douglas, South Lanarkshire are the remains of Douglas Castle: the once great residence belonging to the rich and powerful clan which gave the village its name. Sir Walter Scott used the mansion as inspiration for his 1831 novel, Castle Dangerous – before the building ironically became unsafe following mining subsidence and had to be demolished in 1938. The single surviving tower is anything but dramatic, but forms a landmark on the pleasant, easy stroll around Stable Loch: popular with ducks, geese and dog walkers.
