Traditional fruit tarts are one thing the peaceful village of Ecclefechan is known for; the other is that writer and social commentator Thomas Carlyle was born here in 1795. The man was something of a celebrity during the Victorian era, and was active in fields as broad as philosophy, history, satire and mathematics in both Scotland and London. Some of his views – particularly later in life – are now firmly in fascist territory, with essays advocating hero worship and slavery; unsurprisingly, he’s far less well-known today. Nevertheless, the house in which he was born is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland and contains interesting period features and objects from Carlyle’s life. There’s also a hefty guest book, containing names (some famous) stretching all the way back to the 1880s.
