A curious collection of creatures roams the fields and farmyards outside Hightae, Annandale. Mossburn Community Farm cares for formerly unwanted and abused animals and birds, ranging from horses and Highland cattle, through emus to guinea pigs and tortoises; the site is friendly and free to visit, though donations are welcome. There’s certainly none of the polish or bluster of Scotland’s larger zoos; instead, the motley crew resemble an awkward Noah’s Ark as they amble around the large enclosures, with species mixed together and no fences between animal and visitor. We liked it very much – and keep an eye out for red squirrels scampering across the local roads.
