📌 Visitor centre in Once Brewed, Northumberland
★★

The Sill is the principal visitor centre for Northumberland National Park, located near the park’s southern boundary close to Hadrian’s Wall. It’s named after the Great Whin Sill: a layer of hard, dolerite rock which outcrops to form sudden cliffs nearby, forming a perfect natural defensive barrier to bolster the manmade Roman defences. Inside the visitor centre there’s a shop, café, overnight accommodation and exhibitions on geology, nature and local history – though the “National Landscape Discovery Centre” moniker seems a bit ambitious. Entry is free, with a charge for parking.
