St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral is one of the first buildings you’ll see if you cast your eyes to the left when exiting Newcastle‘s principal railway station. Built in the 1840s in Gothic Revival style, its 222-foot spire is the city’s tallest structure with the exception of modern tower blocks. Closer to ground level, a statue of Cardinal Basil Hume peers down the steps at you as you approach the church. The interior, painted in bold colours, is bedecked with some fine stained-glass – especially the wonderful east window beyond the altar, and a more modern one featuring Tyneside shipbuilding. The large organ in gallery above the entrance is also very striking, completed in 2013.
