Shiel Bridge, Highland
★★

St Dubhthach’s Church is the (ruined) former parish church of Kintail, dedicated to a fairly obscure, 11th century saint. In the aftermath of the 1719 battle of Glenshiel it was used as a hospital to tend to wounded Jacobites, soon leading to its retaliatory burning by Government troops. The building was later repaired and its life as a parish church continued, probably until being superseded in 1856 by a more modern church at Inverinate. Anyway, St Dubhthach’s is worth visiting for its setting alone – on the side of a low mound at the head of Loch Duich. A short, steep path climbs to the top of the mound which is adorned with the Macrae War Memorial, depicting a solemn Highland soldier.

💬 From the layby it’s a 2-min walk to the church along a good track. A clear path leads up to the war memorial and viewpoint.
