πŸ“Œ Tannery in Stein, Isle of Skye
β˜…β˜…

This traditional tannery is a little way off Skye’s main tourist trail on the narrow road to Trumpan Church, but stop here and you’ll rub cheeks with some of the softest sheepskin rugs you’re ever likely to encounter. Cleverly-named Skyeskyns was founded here by the Hartwell family in 1983, and is now Scotland’s only commercial woolskin tannery. In case you think we’re only talking about a shop: the main highlight of a visit here is a workshop tour, where you can see all the machinery and stages of wool production. In order, these are: soaking, washing, fleshing, pickling, tanning, oiling, toggling and racking, drying, tumbling, buffing, trimming, hand combing, hand finishing and ironing. It sounds like hard work, but head upstairs to see (and feel) the luxurious end product and it all seems worthwhile.
