Whisky has long been a prominent part of Orkney’s tourist offering, with popular Highland Park Distillery open for tours since the 1980s. Many visitors are unaware that since 2015 there’s been the option to see a second working distillery only a stone’s throw away from Kirkwall. While Scapa Distillery isn’t as attractive inside in the traditional sense and doesn’t feature floor maltings, you have a better chance of a more personalised tour here due to lower visitor numbers. We were impressed. Scapa whisky is generally unpeated (unlike at Highland Park), and honey appears prominently in various tasting notes.
