This unexpectedly dramatic little canyon – also known as the Devil’s Mill – is found on the River Devon immediately upstream of Rumbling Bridge village. Visit after heavy rain and you might assume the intriguing name refers to boulders being bashed around in the torrent. In fact, it comes from the reverberation caused by vehicles crossing the bridge; the road bridge is built directly over an older one, causing the (supposedly) distinctive noise. Paths lead along both banks through verdant, rainforest-like scenery, with a footbridge enabling a short circuit – though it’s worth continuing on the northwest side until the gorge walls relent a few hundred metres beyond. Glimpses down to river level are limited from the main path, but purpose-built viewing platforms in key spots allow decent photo opportunities – it must be an exciting place in spate. Low light levels allow a colourful array of fungi to spring up during autumn, and red squirrels are present year-round. Fancy a longer walk to get here?
